“Wightman & Hough Company” (W.&H. Co.) operated in Providence, Rhode Island, USA from 1856 to 1922. It is one of the most important jewelry manufacturers of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Marking: a heart-shaped logo with “W&H Co” and “1/4 GOLD SHELL” indicates the manufacturer and material (the medallion is covered with a 1/4 layer of gold (thicker than “plated”, i.e. a more durable finish). Sentimental / religious style with a floral motif cross, decorative edges and a finely textured background. This is one of themost prized by collectorsof the late 19th - early 20th century manufacturers, especially when clear markings remain. The heart-shaped logo with “1/4 GOLD SHELL” is quiterare.
