Majorica is a company based in Mallorca, Spain, founded in 1890, that produces handmade pearls called Majorica pearls. Gems & Gemology described these pearls as “the most widely sold and carefully crafted imitation pearl”. Through meticulous research, the company patented a pearl-making technology that was identical to the natural processes that occur in oysters. Majorica pearl imitation is a patented coating on glass beads made from fish scales. The pearls are then dried, polished, and immersed in a chemical to harden the surface and protect against discoloration and cracking. These pearls are of high quality, making them virtually indistinguishable from natural pearls. Traditionally, jewelers used 925 silver and 14 or 18 carat gold.
